With nearly fifty years of experience in healthcare, I have observed firsthand how even well-intentioned providers can inadvertently overlook patients. While the majority of healthcare professionals sincerely care about assisting their patients, the intricacies of the system often result in frustration among providers and all parties involved, leaving patients feeling lost, neglected, or underserved—particularly when time and resources are constrained. This persistent gap in care profoundly motivated me to pursue a role as a patient advocate. A compelling illustration of this is the case of Mr. Johnson, who suffered a stroke and experienced paralysis on his right side. After five days in the hospital—where he was stabilized and subsequently discharged with a walker, medications, and a comprehensive sixty-page discharge packet—I visited him at his residence two days later. It became evident that he was utilizing an incompatible walker, had not taken his medications due to a lack of understanding of their significance, and possessed limited knowledge of basic self-care. Disturbingly, his essential insulin sliding scale instructions were concealed within the discharge documentation—embedded within the initial five pages—and I had to undertake a two-hour round-trip journey to obtain these critical details because the hospital was unable to email them. This experience reaffirmed my conviction that advocacy is vital—ensuring that patients receive not only appropriate equipment but also clear instructions and education to truly comprehend their care. It is about bridging the divide between medical expertise and patient understanding, thereby empowering individuals to manage their health with confidence. My objective as a patient advocate is to assist others in avoiding these avoidable errors and to ensure they receive the comprehensive support they merit, enabling them to lead healthier and safer lives.
